The formulation of the products in the Aftamed® line possesses mucoadhesive properties due to the use of a particular combination of viscosity-controlling and mucoadhesive agents (polycarbophil / hyaluronic acid) which guarantee the adherence of the products to the oral mucosa, combating the dilution caused by saliva and allowing the product to remain at the site of application for a long period.
Under these circumstances, the action and efficacy of the products is an intrinsic characteristic of the entire formulation matrix (active matrix), which combines synergically with the biological action performed by hyaluronic acid.
When the Aftamed® line was formulated, particular attention was given to all aspects that affect the safety of the oral cavity and its adnexa (e.g. teeth and gums).
The pH is iso-salivary (ie. it has the same value as saliva), which means that the teeth are not exposed to any risk.The characteristics described above are confirmed by the following factors: the pH of the saliva, which is also slightly acid, is between 6.2 and 6.9, and has a buffer capacity able to maintain the pH within the normal physiological range for the oral cavity, even when it tends to move towards more acid values (e.g. 5.5, when coffee or Coca-Cola is drunk); the process of demineralisation of the tooth enamel begins at a pH of 5.7, which is very different from the pH of the Aftamed® line. This pH is generally produced by fermentation of carbohydrates caused by bacteria, which then trigger the cariogenic (tooth decay) process.
